“Even at the end of the 19th century, Russian doctor of medicine Nikolai Lunin for the first time suggested that food, in addition to proteins, fats and carbohydrates, contains small amounts of substances vital for a person, with a deficiency of which diseases develop,” said cosmetologist Elena Romanenko.
The expert explained that about 20 groups of vitamins are currently known, the chemical structure of which is well studied. All these substances can be synthesized and compensate for their deficiency.
A prolonged lack of a particular substance or group leads to vitamin deficiency and hypovitaminosis. It is important to know the difference between them.
“Today, a complete lack of vitamins is rare. Basically, we are talking about hypovitaminosis – a partial deficiency of some element or group. This condition occurs due to violations of the intake of a substance into the body and if it is not used correctly,” added Romanenko.
The cosmetologist emphasized that it is incorrect to use the usual concept of “seasonal beriberi”, since in the vast majority of cases we are talking about partial deficiency.
There are problems:
In addition, there are internal reasons for this state. For example, it develops due to a violation of the absorption of trace elements from food in the gastrointestinal tract, as well as when taking certain medications. It happens that the imbalance appears because the daily requirement for nutrients increases in cold climates, as well as under stress.
Vitamins are involved in various biochemical reactions of the body, which without them slow down and even stop completely. Often the deficiency of one substance can lead to the fact that others also lose their activity.
“The lack of any vitamin is manifested in one way or another by a change in the condition of the skin. At the same time, it is impossible to reliably say what exactly causes unwanted symptoms. Most often, a whole complex of substances is missing,” Romanenko explained.
Their deficiency is evidenced, in particular, by the fragility of nails and hair.
The lack of nutrients is also accompanied by symptoms that resemble chronic fatigue syndrome. These are fatigue, drowsiness, poor appetite, irritability, poor sleep, bleeding gums and frequent viral infections.
“Some hypovitaminosis is similar to the symptoms of allergies, and sometimes allergic conditions are accompanied by a violation of the metabolism of certain vitamins,” said the cosmetologist.
At the same time, it is important not to overdo it with recovery, so as not to lead to an overabundance of nutrients – hypervitaminosis.
This condition is no less dangerous than hypovitaminosis. Moreover, skin manifestations in both cases may be similar. An excess of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) is especially undesirable, since they can accumulate in the body.
